Sustainability at the Heart of Mojo Boutique

Mojo Boutique operates in the love and support of people and the environment. Everything comes full circle as we help local artisans in their livelihood while taking care of the environment at the same time. This is where sustainability works – when we take into account how nature supports the livelihood of our craftspeople, and us giving back to nature.

We work directly with local craftspeople in producing furniture pieces that spark joy into homes. We create unique, handcrafted pieces in small batches. In our production, we carefully select the use of sustainably-sourced materials in all items we make.

Supporting the Livelihood of Craftspeople in Indonesia

We have been living and working in Indonesia for several years. We have come to love the unique craftsmanship of the local artisans in furniture and weaving. Working directly with artisans ensures that we meet their needs and support their creative process in producing the furniture and deco pieces that are loved by many people around the world.

There are no intermediary agents that take a cut of the margin for local artisans. Most importantly, we are fully transparent with whom we are working with. We know exactly who has handcrafted which product and work with them “horizontally.” We don’t subcontract to shady sweatshops. We work with family-run artisan workshops, maintain permanent contact with them, and meet them regularly to collaborate in a real cooperative way.

We support the local economy as we assist in bringing local products to the international market. When you purchase from us, you are supporting the livelihood of local artisans.

Sustainably-sourced Materials

We use sustainably-sourced materials such as recycled wood, bamboo, rattan and others as they are all-natural and regenerating materials; nothing based on hydrocarbons.

We are the only Boutique focusing exclusively on upcycled wood for all our wooden furniture. We use recycled wood coming from old furniture, demolished houses, or disaffected boats and other objects built from solid wood at the end of their lifetime. We choose strong wood known for aging well and wood having natural oil inside. Teak wood is the perfect example.

When you opt for one of our recycled wooden furniture you make a perfect choice for our environment. No additional trees are cut and existing resources are valued instead of it becoming trash.

However, you also make an esthetical choice! First quality teak wood looks nicer the older it is. The veins and knots of the wood are more visible, and its color is warmer, slightly more reddish/brownish. It simply has more character 😊

To upcycle wooden furniture our artisans, need to sand it, polish it, remove all previous colors and nails before creating the new furniture or deco from zero. We use a 100% natural and handmade process to do so. On some of them and only on hidden parts, such as below a table or inside a drawer, you might see small painting dots or a scratch or small holes. It comes from the previous object before it has been upcycled.

The good thing is that because it is recycled, each piece is different, and each wood has its own story and character. You will have a truly unique piece while making a mindful lifestyle choice.

Did you know that water Hyacinth is one of the fastest-growing plants known? Some were found to even grow up to 5 meters a day in South East Asia. You can imagine the state of the plant after only two weeks. It grows like crazy! Each plant can also produce thousands of seeds each year, and these seeds can remain viable for more than 28 years. Such vigorous growers and reproducers!

They are natural, but in most of the countries have been placed artificially. Because of its extreme invasive capacity, they have rapidly reached lakes and rivers. They must be collected to keep them under control. After having been picked and dried in the sun, it becomes a flexible and robust material. A perfect choice for natural, timeless, and durable items without affecting our precious natural resources, an ideal solution for any mindful shopper.

Material from Pandan leave (or Daun Pandan in Indonesia) is surprisingly often confused with seagrass one. Seagrass cultivation can be damageable for the environment as it is a filter of the ocean and a nursery of many species. However, the Pandan leaves are, fortunately, a whole different story! Pandanus tree is used for centuries in South East Asia for cooking as well as clothing. The leaves are fast, and for this reason, there is no difference in its abundance noticed.

Artisans collect the leaves, cutting only mature leaves so that the plant will naturally regenerate. The roots are anyway of no direct use, but only the older leaves are. It is an eco-friendly process as such. Then the leaves are sliced into thin strips and sorted. The whole process is more demanding than water hyacinth, for instance. Sometimes further chemical colouring is used on Pandan leaves, but at Mojo Boutique we don’t. Another ideal solution of material for any mindful shopper.

Banana leaves are large, flexible, and waterproof. They are often used as ecologically friendly disposable food containers or as “plates” in South East Asia.  They are also widely used for decorative and symbolic purposes in numerous Hindu and Buddhist ceremonies. Banana cultivation and use of its leave go back to at least 5000 BFC!

We pick only the dry and already dead leaves, this is not only better for the environment, but it also makes the process easier. It is a robust and fully waterproof material and can be used to store bulky items or used in a bathroom.

Coconut is an excellent example of “everything can be used; we shouldn’t throw away anything.” After having drunk the coconut water or use it to make milk or powder, wouldn’t it be a pity to throw away the rest? The production of coconut bowls creates no waste at all! It is even the opposite as they are already “waste” as such. Unfortunately, each year, millions of coconut shells are burnt, and their combustion releases CO2 and methane in the atmosphere.

So, if you chose to use a coconut bowl, you would have a stylish and quality bowl, but secondly, you will avoid burning the shell! What a win win win solution!

Coconut shells are all different in sizes and shapes, like snowflakes ?. Like the rest of all the material we use at Mojo Boutique, they are natural and bio-degradable.

Are you wondering what is the icing on the cake? It helps you to eat mindfully. Would you imagine putting a greasy or artificial food in such a natural and beauty bowl? Eyes are so important in the process of satisfaction, and this bowl allows us to enjoy pieces of apples as much as grassy chips. You don’t believe it? Have a try!

Woven grass as a fabric implies the most delicate and tricky process to create. No need to wonder too long about the material: we are talking about grass — the most widely and abundant plant on earth ?. But not any green is chosen at Mojo: sustainable long stems only are picked. Because they are fragile, the woven process is minacious. This fabric is better to be used for a lovely finishing or to add some whiter line on the item, which allows avoiding chemical coloring for a last lighter touch.

Rattans are lianas. They grow up to hundreds of meters long. It also grows much faster than most tropical wood.

Rattan is easy to harvest, requires straightforward tools, and is much easier to transport. Rattan exploitation makes it a potential tool in forest maintenance. We work with rattan coming from the plantation and with harvesters who don’t cut stems too young to avoid reducing their ability to re-sprout.

Everyone knows this soft and fluffy fiber. Visually many cottons can be similar. However, the process and the impact on our planet can be extremely different from one method of creation to another. We use organic and natural cotton without using dying chemicals.

Or should we call it the Popeye’s choice? It is sooooo resistant, and no surprise, the construction industry in Asia uses bamboo. Bamboo has a higher specific comprehensive strength than wood, bricks, or concrete and a tensile strength that rivals steel!

At the same time and most importantly, it is eco-friendly. On top of that, bamboo is one of the fastest-growing plants (as Water Hyacinth) in the world. Certain species grow 1 mm every 90 seconds, crazy no?

We use it as a raw product, and there is no need to treat it using complicated and burdensome processes or chemicals. Bamboo is simply like the magic potion of any material and a smart choice of mindful shopper.

Our Carbon Footprint

We calculate all the CO2 emitted by the transport of our furniture from Indonesia to Switzerland using EcoTransIT World – an industry-standard tool where we input the specific mode of transport and determine the emitted CO2. The amount of emitted CO2 is compensated through our projects with our partner, South Pole.

Here are the projects where have taken leaps in offsetting our carbon footprint:

River Hydro Power in Musi, Indonesia
Solar Energy, Thailand
Safe Water Supply, Rwanda

We work with partners that offer complete CO2 offset solutions: DPD and DHL Go Green. The entire chain of transport of the furniture from the artisan in Indonesia to you is completely CO2 offset.

We work directly with local craftspeople in producing furniture pieces that spark joy into homes. We create unique, handcrafted pieces in small batches. In our production, we carefully select the use of sustainably-sourced materials in all items we make.

Our Products are 100% Chemical-free

Mojo Boutique goes beyond just compensating the CO2 footprint of the transport and uses only natural and chemical-free materials. We don’t use formaldehyde to ensure that every piece is safe to use in homes.

Formaldehyde is an important precursor to many materials and chemical compounds. It is mainly used in the production of industrial resins, e.g. for particleboard and coatings.

In view of its widespread use, toxicity, and volatility, formaldehyde poses a significant danger to human health. In 2011, the US National Toxicology Program described formaldehyde as “known to be a human carcinogen” (source: Wikipedia).

We do not use resins or coating (only natural coconut oil) and do not use particleboards at all. We only use real massive wood in our products, and they are free of formaldehyde. In this case, our products are safe for use in the interior and do not emit any volatile particles that may be dangerous if exposed to and particularly so for babies and children.

When comparing furniture, pay close attention if it is made of real massive wood or particleboards. Most cheap furniture uses particle boards, which contain formaldehyde and becomes volatile over time and thus contaminates your home.

Planting Trees For Every Order

We also want to provide active support to improve the state of our world. Therefore we partner with onetreeplanted.org, which plants a tree in Indonesia for every order placed with us. In exchange, you receive a tree certificate from Mojo Boutique, which you can have in your name or donate the tree to someone of your choice.

Plastic-Free Packaging

The packaging we use is eco-friendly and plastic free. You can be rest assured that you are contributing to zero waste practices with every purchase.
